excerpt from Christmas at the Brumby Home
Christmas is a very special time in the pretty little village of Woodstock, Vermont. The snow-covered hillsides are full of laughing children flying down the slopes on their sleds and toboggans. Frozen ponds hold skaters, twirling and carving figure eights into the ice. Christmas lights are strung on the branches of the trees that line the village streets, and beautifully decorated little shops have enchanting gifts displayed in their windows for all of the children to see. Mr. Kettle's Toy Store has a Christmas display with toy trains running through a miniature village that looks just like Woodstock. In Mrs. Dickens' Coffee Shop, the front window has an ice castle with wind-up dolls and toy soldiers dancing to the music of The Nutcracker Suite. Across the streett at Mr. Jacob's bakery, Christmas cookies decorated in beautiful colors are placed in the front window, and the aroma from the bakery greets passersby with the inviting smells of fresh baked cakes, pies and breads. In the center of the village green is an enormous blue spruce tree covered with twinkling lights. Underneath the tree, children gather to sing carols during the days just before Christmas. Through the windows of the houses in the village you can see Christmas trees, and an occasional Santa Claus can be found on front lawns or rooftops. For the children, there is no more special time than this holiday season, and no better place to be than the pretty little village of Woodstock, Vermont.
